Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः सागरवेलायाम् दर्भानास्तीर्य राघवः ।
अञ्जलिम् प्राङ्मुखः कृत्वा प्रतिशिश्ये महोदधेः ॥६-२१-१॥
tataḥ sāgaravelāyāṃ darbhānāstīrya rāghavaḥ । añjaliṃ prāṅmukhaḥ kṛtvā pratiśiśye mahodadhim ॥6-21-1॥
Translation
Then, spreading Darbha grass on the shore of the ocean, Raghava, facing east with folded hands, lay down facing the great ocean.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर राघव (श्री राम) ने सागर के तट पर दर्भ (कुश) बिछाकर, पूर्व की ओर मुख करके और हाथ जोड़कर (अंजलि बनाकर) महासागर के प्रति शयन किया (लेट गए)।
English Commentary
The beginning of Shri Rama's penance. Adopting the posture of a supplicant, he faces East ('prangmukhah'), the direction of new beginnings. Laying on 'Darbha' grass is a standard Vedic practice for rituals. This act, known as 'Darbhashayana', signifies a non-violent appeal to the divine force of nature.

श्री राम की 'उपासना' का आरंभ। यह एक पवित्र वैदिक अनुष्ठान है। 'प्राङ्मुखः' (पूर्व दिशा की ओर मुख) और 'अञ्जलि' (प्रार्थना मुद्रा) उनकी श्रद्धा और विनम्रता को दर्शाते हैं। वे राजा की तरह आदेश नहीं दे रहे, बल्कि एक तपस्वी की तरह याचना कर रहे हैं। इसे 'दर्भशयन' कहा जाता है।
