Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सर्वत्र उत्सृष्ट दण्डम् च लोकः सत् कुरुते नरम् ।
न साम्ना शक्यते कीर्तिर् न साम्ना शक्यते यशः ॥६-२१-१६॥
sarvatrotsṛṣṭadaṇḍaṃ ca lokaḥ satkurute naram । na sāmnā śakyate kīrtirna sāmnā śakyate yaśaḥ ॥6-21-16॥
Translation
'...and who unleashes punishment everywhere, the world honors such a man. Glory is not possible by conciliation, nor is fame possible by conciliation.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'...और जो सब जगह दंड का प्रयोग करता है (मारता-पीटता है), संसार उसी मनुष्य का सत्कार करता है। साम (शांति) से न कीर्ति मिलती है और न यश।'
English Commentary
Philosophy of Force. Shri Rama concludes that 'Danda' (the rod of punishment) is the only currency the world respects. He declares that pacifism ('samna') fails to achieve glory or fame in the face of obstinacy. This justifies his upcoming violent actions.

शक्ति पूजा। श्री राम निष्कर्ष निकालते हैं कि दुनिया केवल 'दंड' (Force) की भाषा समझती है। 'साम' (Conciliation) से न यश मिलता है न जीत। यह श्री राम का एक उग्र शासक वाला रूप है जो आवश्यकता पड़ने पर हिंसा को उचित मानता है।
