Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गोसहस्रप्रदातारम् ह्युपधाय भुजम् महत् ।
अद्य मे मरणम् वाथ तरणम् सागरस्य वा ॥६-२१-८॥
gosahasrapradātāramupadhāya mahādbhujam । adya me maraṇaṃ vātha taraṇaṃ sāgarasya vā ॥6-21-8॥
Translation
...and which is the giver of thousands of cows; making that great arm a pillow, (he vowed): 'Today, either death for me or the crossing of the ocean.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
...तथा जो (दान में) हजारों गाएं देने वाली है, उस महान भुजा को तकिया बनाकर (प्रतिज्ञा की)—'आज या तो मेरी मृत्यु होगी या सागर का तरण (पार करना) होगा।'
English Commentary
The Ultimatum. Shri Rama takes a vow of 'Prayopavesha' (fasting unto death). The phrase 'Maranam va taranam va' signifies absolute determination. The arm that usually gives charity ('pradataram') is now laid down in a demand for justice.
हिंदी टीका
श्री राम की भीषण प्रतिज्ञा। वे 'गोसहस्रप्रदाता' (हजारों गाएं दान करने वाले) हैं, यानी वे दाता हैं, लेकिन आज वे याचक हैं। उनकी प्रतिज्ञा कठोर है: 'मरणं वा तरणं वा' (Do or Die)। वे संकल्प लेते हैं कि रास्ता मिले बिना वे उठेंगे नहीं।
