Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तं तदा समतिक्रान्तं नातिचक्राम राघवः ।
समुद्धतमनित्रघ्नो रामो नदनदीपतिम् ॥६-२२-१६॥
taṃ tadā samatikrāntaṃ nāticakrāma rāghavaḥ |
samuddhatamanitraghno rāmo nadanadīpatim ॥6-22-16॥
Translation
Seeing the Ocean swelling and crossing its limits, Shri Rama, the slayer of foes, did not transgress his own bounds (he held back the arrow).
हिंदी अनुवाद
शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले राघव (श्री राम) ने उस समय अपनी सीमा लांघते हुए उस उद्दंड नद-नदीपति (सागर) पर बाण नहीं छोड़ा (रुक गए)।
English Commentary
A beautiful interplay of words: while the Ocean crossed its boundary (atikranta), Shri Rama did not cross his (na aticakrama). It shows Shri Rama's restraint. Even with the weapon poised, he observes the opponent's reaction. He is not a mindless destroyer but a disciplined warrior waiting for the right moment or submission.

यहाँ श्री राम के चरित्र की महानता पुनः स्थापित होती है। यद्यपि सागर भयभीत होकर अपनी मर्यादा लांघ रहा था (किनारे तोड़ रहा था), श्री राम ने अपनी मर्यादा नहीं छोड़ी। उन्होंने देखा कि सागर विचलित है, इसलिए उन्होंने बाण छोड़ने में संयम बरता। शक्ति के साथ 'नियंत्रण' ही श्री राम को भगवान बनाता है।
