Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरः पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणः ।
सर्वपुष्पमयीं दिव्यां शिरसा धारयन् स्रजम् ॥६-२२-१९॥
raktamālyāmbaradharaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ |
sarvapuṣpamayīṃ divyāṃ śirasā dhārayan srajam ॥6-22-19॥
Translation
He wore crimson garlands and garments. His eyes resembled lotus petals. He bore on his head a divine wreath made of all kinds of flowers.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे लाल माला और लाल वस्त्र धारण किए हुए थे। उनके नेत्र कमल के पत्तों के समान (विशाल) थे। वे अपने सिर पर सभी प्रकार के फूलों से बनी दिव्य माला धारण किए हुए थे।
English Commentary
Red garments often signify power or potency in iconography. The lotus eyes link him to the divine lineage (resembling Vishnu). The garland of 'all flowers' symbolizes water as the source of all vegetation and life. He appears not as a monster, but as a cultured, regal deity.

लाल रंग (रक्त) राजसी ठाठ और शायद भय के कारण उत्पन्न उत्तेजना का भी प्रतीक हो सकता है, किन्तु पारम्परिक रूप से यह देवताओं के लिए मंगलमय भी माना जाता है। कमल नयन होना दैवीय लक्षण है। 'सर्वपुष्पमयी' माला यह दर्शाती है कि जल ही सभी वनस्पतियों के जीवन का आधार है।
