Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उद्धर्तितमहाग्राहः संभ्रान्तोरगराक्षसः ।
देवतानां सरूपाभिः नानारूपाभिरीश्वरः ॥६-२२-२३॥
uddhartitamahāgrāhaḥ saṃbhrāntoragarākṣasaḥ |
devatānāṃ sarūpābhiḥ nānārūpābhirīśvaraḥ ॥6-22-23॥
Translation
Great aquatic predators were agitated, and snakes and demons were bewildered. He, the Lord, was accompanied by river-goddesses possessing forms similar to deities and various other forms.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय बड़े-बड़े ग्राह (मगरमच्छ आदि) उद्वेलित थे, नाग और राक्षस घबराए हुए थे। वे (सागर) देवताओं के समान रूप वाली और नाना रूपों वाली (नदियों) के स्वामी थे।
English Commentary
The Ocean appears as a sovereign monarch (Ishvara). The chaotic state of his subjects (crocodiles, snakes) contrasts with the divine beauty of his consorts (the rivers). It creates a tableaux of a kingdom under siege suing for peace.

सागर अकेले नहीं आए हैं। वे अपने परिवार (जलचरों) और अपनी पत्नियों (नदियों) के साथ आए हैं। नदियों का मानवीकरण 'देवताओं के समान रूप' वाली देवियों के रूप में किया गया है। यह एक राजा का अपने दरबारियों के साथ उपस्थित होने जैसा दृश्य है।
