Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितुः सामर्थ्यमास्थाय तत्त्वमाह महोदधिः ।
दण्ड एव वरो लोके पुरुषस्येति मे मतिः ॥६-२२-४८॥
pituḥ sāmarthyamāsthāya tattvamāha mahodadhiḥ |
daṇḍa eva varo loke puruṣasyeti me matiḥ ॥6-22-48॥
Translation
'Relying on my father's capacity, the Great Ocean spoke the truth. However, my opinion is that in this world, punishment alone is the best option for (ungrateful) persons.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'पिता के सामर्थ्य का आश्रय लेकर महासागर ने सत्य ही कहा है। (किन्तु) मेरा मत यह है कि इस लोक में (दुष्ट) पुरुष के लिए दंड ही श्रेष्ठ (उपाय) है।'
English Commentary
Nala validates Shri Rama's aggressive stance. He observes that the Ocean only cooperated after being threatened. It's a political commentary: benevolence is often seen as weakness by the ungrateful, and force (Danda) is sometimes necessary to elicit cooperation.
हिंदी टीका
नल, श्री राम के दंड-विधान का समर्थन करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि सागर ने मेरी प्रशंसा तो की (सत्य कहा), लेकिन वह सीधे रास्ते पर तब आया जब उसे दंड का भय दिखाया गया। नल यहाँ 'भय बिन होय न प्रीत' की नीति का समर्थन कर रहे हैं।
