Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रचकाशे तदाकाशमुल्काशतविदीपितम् ।
अन्तरिक्षाच्च निर्घाता निर्जग्मुरतुलस्वनाः ॥६-२२-९॥
pracakāśe tadākāśamulkāśatavidīpitam |
antarikṣācca nirghātā nirjagmuratulasvanāḥ ॥6-22-9॥
Translation
At that time, the sky blazed with hundreds of falling meteors, and thunderous crashes of incomparable sound erupted from the atmosphere.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय आकाश सैकड़ों उल्काओं के गिरने से प्रदीप्त हो उठा और अंतरिक्ष से अतुलनीय शब्द वाले वज्रपात (निर्घात) होने लगे।
English Commentary
Meteors and thunderbolts without clouds (nirghata) are traditional omens of calamity in Sanskrit epics. The sky reflects the turmoil on earth. The visual of a burning sky prepares the reader for the imminent boiling of the ocean. It sets a scene of apocalyptic grandeur.

उल्कापात (Meteor showers) और निर्घात (वज्रपात) प्राचीन साहित्य में सदा ही बड़े संकट या महायुद्ध के अपशकुन माने गए हैं। यहाँ यह श्री राम के क्रोध की तीव्रता का भौतिक प्रकटीकरण है। आकाश स्वयं अग्नि की वर्षा कर रहा है, जो सागर को सुखाने के संकल्प का समर्थन करता प्रतीत होता है।
