काकाः श्येनास्तथा नीचा गृध्राः परिपतन्ति च ।
शिवाश्चाप्यशुभान्नादान्नदन्ति सुमहाभयान् ॥६-२३-११॥
kākāḥ śyenāstathā gṛdhrā nīcaiḥ paripatanti ca |
śivāścāpyaśivānnādānnadanti sumahābhayān ॥6-23-11॥
Translation
'Crows, hawks, and vultures are flying low. And jackals are howling very terrifying and inauspicious sounds.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'कौवे, बाज और गिद्ध नीचे उड़ रहे हैं। और सियारिनें भी बहुत भयानक और अमंगलकारी आवाजें निकाल रही हैं।'
English Commentary
Scavengers flying low is a practical sign of anticipating carnage. In Indian poetics, the howling of jackals (shiva) is synonymous with the battlefield environment (Veera/Raudra Rasa). It signifies that death is imminent and the scavengers are gathering for a feast.
हिंदी टीका
मांसाहारी पक्षियों का नीचे उड़ना यह बताता है कि वे शवों के मिलने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं। सियारिनों (शिवा) का रोना युद्ध क्षेत्र में आसन्न मृत्यु का सबसे प्रत्यक्ष संकेत है। ये जीव जानते हैं कि यहाँ भोजन (लाशों) का भंडार लगने वाला है।
