रावण का यह प्रश्न अलंकारिक नहीं, बल्कि उसके भ्रम (Delusion) का प्रतीक है। उसने अतीत में दिग्विजय की थी, इसलिए उसे लगता है कि उसका पतन असंभव है। 'परुषं वाक्यं' (कठोर वचन) उसकी क्रूरता को दर्शाता है।
