Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गृहीतो वा न विज्ञातो भारो ज्ञानस्य वोह्यते ।
ईदृशैः सचिवैर्युक्तो मूर्खैर्दिष्ट्या धराम्यहम् ॥६-२९-१०॥
gṛhīto vā na vijñāto bhāro jñānasya vohyate |
īdṛśaiḥ sacivairyukto mūrkhairdiṣṭyā dharāmyaham ॥6-29-10॥
Translation
Either you did not grasp the knowledge, or having grasped it, you did not understand it; you are merely carrying the burden of knowledge. It is by luck that I still hold the kingdom while united with such foolish ministers.
हिंदी अनुवाद
या तो तुमने ज्ञान ग्रहण ही नहीं किया, या जानकर भी समझा नहीं; तुम केवल ज्ञान का भार ढो रहे हो। यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि ऐसे मूर्ख मंत्रियों से युक्त होकर भी मैं (अब तक) राज्य धारण कर रहा हूँ।
English Commentary
Using a potent metaphor, Ravana accuses them of merely carrying the 'weight of knowledge' without understanding it, like a donkey carrying sandalwood. He sarcasm strikes deep when he says it is by sheer luck ('dishtya') he still rules despite having such 'murkhaih' (fools) as ministers. This reveals his hubris; he believes his survival is due to his own power alone, discounting the counsel that is actually trying to save him.

रावण अपने मंत्रियों को 'ज्ञान-भार वाहक' (केवल बोझ ढोने वाले, ज्ञानी नहीं) कहता है। वह व्यंग्य करता है ('दिष्ट्या' - भाग्य से) कि ऐसे मूर्खों के साथ रहते हुए भी उसका राज्य अब तक सुरक्षित है। यह रावण के अति-आत्मविश्वास को दर्शाता है। वह अपनी सफलता का श्रेय केवल स्वयं को देता है और अपनी आसन्न पराजय के लिए पहले से ही अपने मंत्रियों को बलि का बकरा बना रहा है।
