हन्यामहं त्विमौ पापौ शत्रु पक्षप्रशंसकौ ।
यदि पूर्वोपकारैर्मे न क्रोधो मृदुतां व्रजेत् ॥६-२९-१३॥
hanyāmahaṃ tvimau pāpau śatru pakṣapraśaṃsakau |
yadi pūrvopakārairme na krodho mṛdutāṃ vrajet ॥6-29-13॥
Translation
I would have surely killed these two sinners who are praising the enemy's side, were it not that my anger is softened by the memory of their past services.

शत्रु पक्ष की प्रशंसा करने वाले इन दोनों पापियों को मैं मार ही डालता, यदि मेरे पिछले उपकारों के कारण मेरा क्रोध कोमलता को न प्राप्त होता।
English Commentary
Ravana decides to spare them, not out of forgiveness, but due to a transactional calculation of their past utility ('purvopakaraih'). He labels them 'papau' (sinners) for the crime of honesty. This shows that while Ravana is a tyrant, he retains a code of loyalty to those who have served him well in the past, allowing his rage to 'soften' just enough to spare their lives.

अंततः, रावण अपने क्रोध पर थोड़ा नियंत्रण करता है, लेकिन दया के कारण नहीं, बल्कि 'पूर्वोपकारैः' (पुराने एहसानों/सेवाओं) की स्मृति के कारण। वह उन्हें 'पापियों' (पापौ) कहता है क्योंकि उन्होंने शत्रु की प्रशंसा की। यह रावण के चरित्र का एक रोचक पहलू है—वह क्रूर है, लेकिन कृतघ्न नहीं है (कम से कम अपने सेवकों के प्रति)। वह पुराने सेवा-भाव का मान रखते हुए उन्हें जीवनदान देता है।
