हतावेव कृतघ्नौ तौ मयि स्नेहपराङ्मुखौ ।
एवमुक्तौ तु सव्रीडौ तावुभौ शुकसारणौ ॥६-२९-१५॥
hatāveva kṛtaghnau tau mayi snehaparāṅmukhau |
evamuktau tu savrīḍau tāvubhau śukasāraṇau ॥6-29-15॥
Translation
(Ravana thought) 'These ungrateful ones, turned away from affection towards me, are as good as dead.' Being spoken to thus, both Shuka and Sarana were filled with shame.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(रावण ने मन ही मन सोचा) 'मुझसे स्नेह न रखने वाले ये कृतघ्न तो मारे हुए के समान ही हैं।' इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर वे दोनों शुक और सारण लज्जित हो गए।
English Commentary
Ravana internally considers them 'hataveva' (as good as dead) and 'krtaghnau' (ungrateful), equating honest reporting with a lack of affection ('sneha'). This distorts the definition of loyalty. The spies leave 'savridau' (ashamed/embarrassed). Their shame stems from the public rebuke and the realization that their loyalty was questioned by the very master they tried to warn.

रावण उन्हें 'कृतघ्न' (एहसान फरामोश) मानता है क्योंकि उन्होंने कड़वा सत्य बोला। उसकी दृष्टि में स्वामी के प्रति 'स्नेह' का अर्थ है स्वामी के भ्रम को बनाए रखना। शुक और सारण 'सव्रीडौ' (लज्जित) होकर चले गए। उनकी लज्जा अपनी गलती के लिए नहीं, बल्कि राजा के सामने हुए अपमान के कारण थी। वे निष्ठावान थे, फिर भी उन्हें गद्दार समझा गया, यह एक सेवक की सबसे बड़ी पीड़ा है।
