Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततस्ते तं महात्मानं चारं राक्षससत्तमम् ।
कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणं जग्मुर्यत्र रामः सलक्ष्मणः ॥६-२९-२४॥
tataste taṃ mahātmānaṃ cāraṃ rākṣasasattamam |
kṛtvā pradakṣiṇaṃ jagmuryatra rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ ॥6-29-24॥
Translation
Then, having circumambulated that high-souled spy, the best among Rakshasas (Shardula), they went to where Shri Rama was along with Lakshmana.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब वे (अन्य गुप्तचर) उस महात्मा और राक्षसों में श्रेष्ठ गुप्तचर (शार्दूल) की (भी) परिक्रमा करके, वहाँ गए जहाँ लक्ष्मण सहित श्री राम विद्यमान थे।
English Commentary
The spies depart for the enemy camp. The term 'mahatmanam' (great-souled) usually applies to Ravana here as the object of circumambulation, or arguably Shardula as their team leader. They head straight into the danger zone, 'yatra ramah', seeking the location of Shri Rama and Lakshmana to fulfill their king's command.

यहाँ पाठ में थोड़ा भेद हो सकता है, लेकिन अर्थ यह है कि उन्होंने रावण और अपने नेता का सम्मान किया। वे सुवेल पर्वत की ओर बढ़े जहाँ श्री राम की सेना थी। 'राक्षससत्तमम्' (राक्षसों में श्रेष्ठ) शब्द शार्दूल या रावण के लिए प्रयुक्त हो सकता है, संदर्भानुसार यह रावण के लिए अधिक उपयुक्त लगता है, या फिर दल के सदस्य अपने नेता शार्दूल का सम्मान कर रहे हैं। गंतव्य स्पष्ट है—श्री राम और लक्ष्मण का शिविर।
