Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रेक्षमाणाश्चमू तां च बभूवुर्भयविक्लवाः ।
ते तु धर्मात्मना दृष्टा राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसाः ॥६-२९-२६॥
prekṣamāṇāścamū tāṃ ca babhūvurbhayaviklavāḥ |
te tu dharmātmanā dṛṣṭā rākṣasendreṇa rākṣasāḥ ॥6-29-26॥
Translation
Observing that army, they became overwhelmed with fear. However, those Rakshasas were spotted by the righteous Lord of Rakshasas (Vibhishana).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस वानर सेना को देखकर वे भय से व्याकुल हो गए। किन्तु, उन राक्षसों को धर्मात्मा राक्षसेन्द्र (विभीषण) ने देख लिया।
English Commentary
Fear strikes the spies upon seeing the sheer magnitude of the army ('chamu'). Their cover is blown almost immediately by Vibhishana. Vibhishana is described as 'dharmatmana' (righteous soul) and 'rakshasendrena' (lord of Rakshasas). As an insider, he recognizes his own kin despite their disguises. This proves the strategic value of Vibhishana; he acts as the counter-intelligence shield for Shri Rama.

सेना का विशाल आकार देखकर नए गुप्तचर भी 'भयविक्लवाः' (डर से घबराए हुए) हो गए। उनकी गोपनीयता अधिक देर नहीं टिकी। 'धर्मात्मना राक्षसेन्द्रेण'—यहाँ विभीषण के लिए प्रयुक्त विशेषण महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। विभीषण न केवल 'राक्षसेन्द्र' (राक्षसों के स्वामी, भावी राजा) हैं, बल्कि 'धर्मात्मा' भी हैं। उनकी दृष्टि से अपने ही जाति के छद्मवेशी राक्षस नहीं बच सके। विभीषण की सतर्कता श्री राम की सुरक्षा का मुख्य स्तंभ है।
