Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वानरैरर्दितास्ते तु विक्रान्तैर्लघुविक्रमैः ।
पुनर्लङ्कामनुप्राप्ताः श्वसन्तो नष्टचेतसः ॥६-२९-२९॥
vānarairarditāste tu vikrāntairlaghuvikramaiḥ |
punarlaṅkāmanuprāptāḥ śvasanto naṣṭacetasaḥ ॥6-29-29॥
Translation
Tormented by the valiant monkeys who were swift in their prowess, those spies returned to Lanka, panting and having lost their wits.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शीघ्र पराक्रम दिखाने वाले बलवान वानरों द्वारा पीड़ित किए गए वे राक्षस, हांफते हुए और सुध-बुध खोकर (नष्टचेतसः) पुनः लंका लौट आए।
English Commentary
Although spared death, they were roughly handled ('arditah') by the agile ('laghu-vikramaih') monkeys. They returned to Lanka 'shvasanto' (gasping for breath) and 'nashta-cetasah' (disoriented/terrified). The repetition of spies returning in terror reinforces the psychological dominance of the Vanara army even before the main battle has begun.

यद्यपि श्री राम ने उन्हें जीवनदान दिया, वानरों ने उन्हें पर्याप्त 'प्रसाद' (पिटाई) देकर भेजा। वे 'श्वसन्तो' (सांस फूलते हुए) और 'नष्टचेतसः' (हवास खोए हुए) लंका लौटे। 'लघुविक्रमैः' वानरों की चपलता को दर्शाता है। यह दूसरी बार है जब रावण के गुप्तचर भयभीत होकर लौटे हैं, जो रावण के लिए एक और अशुभ संकेत है।
