रिपूणां प्रतिकूलानां युद्धार्थमभिवर्तताम् ।
उभाभ्यां सदृशं नाम वक्तुमप्रस्तवे स्तवम् ॥६-२९-८॥
ripūṇāṃ pratikūlānāṃ yuddhārthamabhivartatām |
ubhābhyāṃ sadṛśaṃ nāma vaktumaprastave stavam ॥6-29-8॥
Translation
Is it befitting for both of you to sing the praises of enemies who are adverse and advancing for war, in this inopportune context?

युद्ध के लिए आए हुए प्रतिकूल शत्रुओं की, इस प्रकार बिना अवसर के (प्रशंसा का) प्रस्ताव छेड़कर, तुम दोनों के द्वारा उनकी स्तुति करना क्या उचित है?
English Commentary
Ravana mistakes intelligence briefing for eulogy. He accuses the spies of singing a 'stavam' (hymn of praise) for the enemy at an 'aprastave' (inopportune time). A wise king sees facts as tools for strategy; a delusional king sees uncomfortable facts as betrayal. Ravana fails to distinguish between the description of the enemy's capability and the glorification of the enemy, blinding himself to the warning implicit in their report.

रावण की आपत्ति शत्रु के बल के वर्णन पर है जिसे वह 'स्तवम्' (स्तुति/प्रशंसा) मान रहा है। एक रणनीतिकार के लिए शत्रु की शक्ति का यथार्थ आकलन आवश्यक है, परन्तु रावण इसे 'अप्रस्ताव' (बिना अवसर की बात) कह रहा है। उसका अहंकार उसे यह देखने से रोकता है कि शुक और सारण उसे चेतावनी दे रहे थे, न कि शत्रु की भक्ति कर रहे थे। वह तथ्यों को 'शत्रु-भक्ति' के रूप में गलत समझ रहा है।
