Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न्यर्बुदम् रक्षसाम् अत्र उत्तर द्वारम् आश्रितम् ।
रथिनः च अश्व वाहाः च कुल पुत्राः सुपूजिताः ॥६-३-२७॥
carmakhaḍgadharāḥ sarve tathā sarvāstrakovidāḥ । nyarbudaṃ rakṣasāmatra uttaradvāramāśritam ॥6-3-27॥
Translation
They all carry shields and swords and are proficient in all missiles. Here, one hundred million Rakshasas are stationed at the Northern Gate.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे सब ढाल और तलवार धारण किए हुए हैं तथा सभी अस्त्रों में निपुण हैं। यहाँ उत्तर द्वार (Northern Gate) पर दस करोड़ (न्यर्बुद) राक्षस तैनात हैं।
English Commentary
The Northern Gate, facing India, guards against the expected direction of invasion. Hence, it has the largest force: 'Nyarbuda' (100 million/myriad). While the number might be poetic hyperbole for 'innumerable', strategically it makes sense that the northern sector is the most heavily defended front.

उत्तर द्वार पर सबसे बड़ी सेना है—'न्यर्बुद' (10 करोड़)। संख्या अतिशयोक्तिपूर्ण हो सकती है, लेकिन इसका अर्थ है 'सर्वाधिक जमावड़ा'। चूँकि भारत उत्तर में है, इसलिए रावण को उत्तर से ही आक्रमण की अपेक्षा है, इसलिए उसने मुख्य बल ('Main Force') वहीं रखा है।
