Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कीदृशाः किंप्रभाः सौम्य वानरा ये दुरासदाः ।
कस्य पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च तत्त्वमाख्याहि राक्षस ॥६-३०-१७॥
kīdṛśāḥ kiṃprabhāḥ saumya vānarā ye durāsadāḥ |
kasya putrāśca pautrāśca tattvamākhyāhi rākṣasa ॥6-30-17॥
Translation
O gentle Rakshasa! What are they like? What is their radiance/power? Whose sons and grandsons are these unassailable monkeys? Tell me the truth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौम्य राक्षस! वे दुर्धर्ष वानर कैसे हैं? उनका तेज (प्रभाव) कैसा है? वे किसके पुत्र और पौत्र हैं? मुझे ठीक-ठीक (तत्त्वतः) बताओ।
English Commentary
Ravana probes for details on lineage (putra pautrah). In epic warfare, lineage denoted capacity and divine backing. He acknowledges them as durasadah (difficult to approach/conquer). Calling Shardula saumya (gentle one) marks a shift from his earlier anger; he now needs the spy's cooperation to understand the 'truth' (tattvam) of the enemy's genetic superiority.

रावण वंश-परंपरा और वंशावली (Lineage) में रुचि रखता है। प्राचीन युद्धों में योद्धा का कुल उसके बल का परिचायक होता था। वह पूछता है 'कस्य पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च' (किसके बेटे और पोते हैं)। उसे पता है कि वानर सेना में देवता अंश से उत्पन्न योद्धा हैं। 'सौम्य' संबोधन शार्दूल को आश्वस्त करने के लिए है। वह अब 'तत्त्वम्' (तथ्य/सत्य) सुनना चाहता है।
