अयथावच्च ते वर्णो दीनश्चासि निशाचर ।
नासि कच्चिदमित्राणां क्रुद्धानां वशमागतः ॥६-३०-३॥
ayathāvacca te varṇo dīnaścāsi niśācara |
nāsi kaccidamitrāṇāṃ kruddhānāṃ vaśamāgataḥ ॥6-30-3॥
Translation
O Night-wanderer! Your complexion appears unnatural, and you look miserable. Were you perchance fallen into the clutches of the angry enemies?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे निशाचर! तुम्हारा रंग (चेहरा) स्वाभाविक नहीं लग रहा है और तुम दीन (दुखी) दिखाई दे रहे हो। कहीं तुम क्रुद्ध शत्रुओं के वश में तो नहीं पड़ गए थे?
English Commentary
Ravana demonstrates sharp observational skills here. He notices Shardula's pale complexion (ayathavat varna) and miserable demeanor (dina). His question implies a realization of the dangers his spies faced. It also reflects a tactical concern: if the spy was captured by 'angry enemies,' intelligence might have been compromised, or the spy might have been traumatized by the enemy's power.

रावण एक कुशल शासक की भांति अपने सेवक की शारीरिक अवस्था को भांप लेता है। शार्दूल का 'वर्ण' (चेहरे का रंग) उड़ा हुआ है और वह 'दीन' (हताश) है। रावण का प्रश्न 'कच्चित्' (क्या ऐसा तो नहीं) से आरम्भ होता है, जो उसकी आशंका को दर्शाता है। उसे भय है कि उसका गुप्तचर पकड़ा गया था, जिसका अर्थ है कि शत्रु को रावण की योजनाओं का आभास हो चुका है या शत्रु की क्रूरता ने उसके सेवक का मनोबल तोड़ दिया है।
