इति तेनानुशिष्टस्तु वाचं मन्दमुदीरयत् ।
तदा राक्षसशार्दूलं शार्दूलो भयविह्वलः ॥६-३०-४॥

tadā rākṣasaśārdūlaṃ śārdūlo bhayavihvalaḥ ॥6-30-4॥
Translation
Questioned thus by him, Shardula, overwhelmed with fear, then slowly spoke words to the tiger among Rakshasas (Ravana).

उस (रावण) के द्वारा इस प्रकार पूछे जाने पर, भय से व्याकुल शार्दूल ने तब राक्षसों में श्रेष्ठ (रावण) से धीरे-धीरे (मंद स्वर में) कहना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Shardula, usually a fierce operative, is now described as bhayavihvala (overwhelmed with fear). He speaks mandam (slowly/faintly), indicating trauma and a loss of confidence. His fear is likely twofold: the terrifying encounter with the Vanaras and the dread of reporting failure to the volatile Ravana. The text plays on the word 'Shardula' (Tiger), contrasting the spy named Tiger with Ravana, the true 'Tiger among Rakshasas'.
