Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नूनमन्यां मया जातिं वारितं दानमुत्तमम् ।
याहमद्येह शोचामि भार्या सर्वातिथेरपि ॥६-३२-३०॥
nūnamanyāṃ mayā jātiṃ vāritaṃ dānamuttamam |
yāhamadyeha śocāmi bhāryā sarvātitherapi ॥6-32-30॥
Translation
'Surely, in another birth, I must have prevented a supreme charity/gift. That is why, even being the wife of the one who is a host to all (Shri Rama), I grieve here today.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'निश्चय ही मैंने पूर्व जन्म में कोई उत्तम दान (किसी को देने से) रोका होगा, जिसके कारण 'सर्वातिथि' (सबके लिए अतिथि-सत्कार करने वाले श्री राम) की पत्नी होकर भी आज मैं यहाँ शोक कर रही हूँ।'
English Commentary
Sita turns to the Law of Karma. She hypothesizes that in a past life (anyam jatim), she must have obstructed a noble gift (varitam danam uttamam). This specific sin is said to result in misery. The irony is sharp: she is the wife of Shri Rama, the universal host/giver (sarvatitheh), yet she is destitute. She rationalizes her suffering as karmic retribution.

कर्म सिद्धांत के अनुसार सीता अपने दुख का कारण खोजती हैं। शास्त्रों में 'दान में बाधा डालना' महापाप माना गया है जिससे दरिद्रता और दुख मिलता है। श्री राम 'सर्वातिथि' (सबके आश्रयदाता) हैं, फिर भी उनकी पत्नी अनाथ है—यह विरोधाभास सीता को लगता है कि उनके किसी पुराने पाप का फल है।
