Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रथमं मरणं नार्या भर्तुर्वैगुण्यमुच्यते ।
सुवृत्त साधुवृत्तायाः संवृत्तस्त्वं ममाग्रतः ॥६-३२-९॥
prathamaṃ maraṇaṃ nāryā bharturvaiguṇyamucyate |
suvṛtta sādhuvṛttāyāḥ saṃvṛttastvaṃ mamāgrataḥ ॥6-32-9॥
Translation
'O virtuous one! It is said that death occurring first for the wife (before the husband) is a merit/blessing. But, though I am of good conduct, you have passed away before me.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'हे सदाचारी! शास्त्र कहते हैं कि नारी का पहले मर जाना और पति का बाद में मरना (नारी के लिए) गुण (भाग्य) है, किन्तु साधु स्वभाव वाली मेरे सामने तुम (मुझसे पहले) चल बसे (मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुए)।'
English Commentary
Sita reflects on the cultural ideal where a wife passing away before her husband is considered a blessing (sumangali), as she doesn't have to suffer widowhood. She questions why, despite her being sadhuvrittaya (of righteous conduct), fate has been cruel enough to let Shri Rama die before her (mamagratah - in front of me/before me). It highlights the tragedy of surviving one's beloved.
हिंदी टीका
यहाँ 'वैगुण्यम्' शब्द का अर्थ संदर्भानुसार 'विपरीत' या 'दोष' हो सकता है, लेकिन टीकाकारों के अनुसार यहाँ सीता कह रही हैं कि पत्नी का पहले मरना 'सधवा' मृत्यु मानी जाती है जो श्रेष्ठ है। श्री राम का उनसे पहले जाना सीता के लिए दुर्भाग्य है। वह अपनी 'साधुवृत्तता' (पवित्र आचरण) की दुहाई देती हैं कि पुण्य करने पर भी उन्हें यह दंड क्यों मिला?
