ततस्तस्या हितं सख्याश्चिकीर्षन्ती सखी वचः ।
उवाच काले कालज्ञा स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणी ॥६-३४-२॥
tatastasyā hitaṃ sakhyāścikīrṣantī sakhī vacaḥ |
uvāca kāle kālajñā smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī ॥6-34-2॥
Translation
Then, wishing to do good for her friend, the time-knower (Sarama), who speaks with a preceding smile, spoke these words at the appropriate time.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब अपनी सखी (सीता) का हित करने की इच्छा रखने वाली, समय को जानने वाली (कालज्ञा) और पहले मुस्कुराकर बात करने वाली उस सखी (सरमा) ने उचित समय पर यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Sarama is portrayed as the ideal companion. She is kalajna (knowing the right timing) and speaks only after smiling (smitapurva), a non-verbal cue designed to instill confidence and break the spell of doom surrounding Sita. Her intention is purely hitam (welfare/good) for her friend, contrasting sharply with the malicious intent of the other Rakshasis.

सरमा के व्यक्तित्व के गुण यहाँ उजागर होते हैं। वह 'कालज्ञा' है—जानती है कि कब क्या बोलना चाहिए। शोक में डूबी सीता को संभालने के लिए 'स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणी' (बोलने से पहले मुस्कुराने वाली) होना आवश्यक था, ताकि सीता को विश्वास हो सके कि सब कुछ नष्ट नहीं हुआ है। एक अच्छी सखी वही है जो संकट काल में हितकारी वचन बोले।
