जगत्संतापनः क्रूरो गर्हयन् राक्षसेश्वरः ।
तरणं सागरस्यापि विक्रमं बलसंचयम् ॥६-३५-४॥
jagatsaṃtāpanaḥ krūro garhayan rākṣaseśvaraḥ |
taraṇaṃ sāgarasyāpi vikramaṃ balasaṃcayam ॥6-35-4॥
Translation
The cruel Lord of Rakshasas, the tormentor of the world, spoke while condemning (belittling) the crossing of the ocean, the valor (of Shri Rama), and the gathering of the army.

जगत को संताप (दुख) देने वाला वह क्रूर राक्षसराज, (श्री राम के) सागर पार करने, उनके पराक्रम और सेना के संग्रह की निंदा (मजाक उड़ाते हुए) करते हुए बोला।
English Commentary
Ravana is described as 'jagatsaṃtāpanaḥ' (tormentor of the world). He resorts to 'garhayan' (condemning/belittling) Shri Rama's feats like crossing the ocean. This is a classic psychological defense mechanism—downplaying the enemy's achievements to mask one's own insecurity. He refuses to openly acknowledge that a mere human has achieved the impossible.

रावण को 'जगत्संतापनः' (जगत को पीड़ा देने वाला) कहा गया है। वह श्री राम की उपलब्धियों (सागर पार करना, सेना जुटाना) की 'गर्हयन्' (निंदा/उपेक्षा) करता है। यह एक रक्षात्मक मनोवैज्ञानिक तंत्र (defensive mechanism) है—शत्रु की शक्ति को तुच्छ बताकर अपने डर को छिपाना। वह स्वीकार नहीं करना चाहता कि एक मनुष्य ने असंभव कार्य कर दिखाया है।
