रावणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा इति मातामहोऽब्रवीत् ।
विद्यास्वभिविनीतो यो राजा राजनयानुगः ॥६-३५-७॥
rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā iti mātāmaho'bravīt |
vidyāsvabhivinīto yo rājā rājanayānugaḥ ॥6-35-7॥
Translation
Hearing Ravana's words, his maternal grandfather spoke thus: 'The king who is well-disciplined in the sciences (scriptures) and follows the path of royal policy...'

रावण के वचन सुनकर, उसके नाना (माल्यवान) ने यह कहा—'जो राजा विद्याओं (शास्त्रों) में विनीत (शिक्षित) होता है और राजनीति (राजनय) का अनुसरण करता है...'
English Commentary
Malyavan begins by lecturing Ravana on proper kingship. He defines a true king as one 'abhivinīta' (well-disciplined/educated) in sciences and a follower of 'rājanaya' (polity). This is a subtle critique of Ravana, implying that despite his scholarship, he is failing to act according to political wisdom. Malyavan's goal is to steer Ravana towards a treaty.

माल्यवान रावण को नीति का पाठ पढ़ाना शुरू करता है। वह 'विद्यासु अभिविनीतः' (विद्याओं में सुशिक्षित) और 'राजनयानुगः' (नीति का पालन करने वाला) राजा की परिभाषा देता है। यह परोक्ष रूप से रावण की आलोचना है कि वह विद्वान होते हुए भी इस समय नीति का पालन नहीं कर रहा है। माल्यवान का उद्देश्य रावण को संधि के लिए मनाना है।
