तत्तु माल्यवतो वाक्यं हितमुक्तं दशाननः ।
न मर्षयति दुष्टात्मा कालस्य वशमागतः ॥६-३६-१॥
tattu mālyavato vākyaṃ hitamuktaṃ daśānanaḥ |
na marṣayati duṣṭātmā kālasya vaśamāgataḥ ॥6-36-1॥
Translation
The ten-faced Ravana (Dashanana), possessing an evil soul and having come under the sway of Time (Destiny/Death), did not tolerate those beneficial words spoken by Malyavan.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दशमुख रावण (दशानन), जो काल के वश में हो चुका था और दुष्ट बुद्धि वाला था, माल्यवान द्वारा कहे गए उस हितकारी वचन को सहन नहीं कर सका।
English Commentary
Malyavan, Ravana's maternal grandfather and a seasoned statesman, advised peace. However, Ravana represents the archetype of a tyrant blinded by hubris. The phrase kalasya vashamagatah (under the control of Time/Destiny) indicates that his refusal to listen to reason is a symptom of his impending doom. When a soul is corrupted (dushtatma) and marked for destruction by cosmic law, even the wisest counsel feels like an insult.

माल्यवान रावण के नाना और एक अनुभवी मंत्री थे। उन्होंने रावण को संधि करने की सलाह दी थी। किन्तु, जब विनाश का समय निकट आता है, तो बुद्धि भ्रष्ट हो जाती है ('विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि')। रावण को यहाँ 'दुष्टात्मा' और 'कालस्य वशमागतः' (काल के वश में आया हुआ) कहा गया है। अहंकार और आसन्न मृत्यु ने उसकी सुनने की क्षमता को अवरुद्ध कर दिया था। वह अपने ही हितैषी की बातों को विष के समान मान रहा था।
