Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तु तीत्वार्णवं रामः सह वानरसेनया ।
प्रतिजानामि ते सत्यं न जीवन् प्रतियास्यति ॥६-३६-१३॥
sa tu tītvārṇavaṃ rāmaḥ saha vānarasenayā |
pratijānāmi te satyaṃ na jīvan pratiyāsyati ॥6-36-13॥
Translation
'That Shri Rama has crossed the ocean with the monkey army, but I promise you truly: he shall not return alive.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'श्री राम वानर सेना के साथ समुद्र पार करके आ तो गया है, (लेकिन) मैं तुमसे सत्य प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ कि वह जीवित वापस नहीं जाएगा।'
English Commentary
Ravana makes a solemn vow (pratijanami satyam) that Shri Rama will not return alive. Irony drips from this verse; Shri Rama indeed will not 'return' (retreat) but will march forward to victory. Ravana's confidence is absolute, but his understanding of 'truth' is flawed by his arrogance.
हिंदी टीका
रावण एक और प्रतिज्ञा करता है। यहाँ एक गूढ़ व्यंग्य (Irony) है—रावण कहता है श्री राम जीवित नहीं लौटेगा। वास्तव में, श्री राम विजयी होकर ही लौटेंगे, खाली हाथ नहीं। रावण की यह 'सत्य प्रतिज्ञा' उसके अपने विनाश की भविष्यवाणी सिद्ध होगी।
