Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
व्यादिदेश महामायं बहुभी राक्षसैर्वृतम् ।
उत्तरस्यां पुरद्वारि व्यादिश्य शुकसारणौ ॥६-३६-२०॥
vyādideśa mahāmāyaṃ bahubhī rākṣasairvṛtam |
uttarasyāṃ puradvāri vyādiśya śukasāraṇau ॥6-36-20॥
Translation
Having ordered that great illusionist (Indrajit) surrounded by many Rakshasas, he assigned Shuka and Sarana to the Northern City Gate.
हिंदी अनुवाद
बहुत से राक्षसों से घिरे हुए उस महामायावी (इन्द्रजित) को तैनात करके, उसने नगर के उत्तरी द्वार पर शुक और सारण को आदेश दिया।
English Commentary
The Northern Gate faces the enemy directly (Mount Suvela). Ravana assigns Shuka and Sarana here. While they are spies, in this context, they likely serve as commanders of intelligence-led units or perhaps Ravana keeps them close to himself (as he takes the North too).
हिंदी टीका
उत्तरी द्वार महत्त्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि श्री राम सुवेल पर्वत से (उत्तर की ओर से) आ रहे हैं। यहाँ शुक और सारण (गुप्तचर मंत्री) को रखा गया। यह थोड़ा आश्चर्यजनक है कि योद्धाओं की जगह गुप्तचरों को रखा गया, लेकिन शायद उनकी जानकारी रावण के लिए वहां उपयोगी थी।
