मध्यमेऽस्थापयद्गुल्मे बहुभिः सह राक्षसैः ।
एवं विधानं लङ्कायाः कृत्वा राक्षसपुंगवः ॥६-३६-२२॥ कृतकृत्यमिवात्मानं मन्यते कालचोदितः ॥ ॥६-३६-२२॥
madhyame'sthāpayadgulme bahubhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ |
evaṃ vidhānaṃ laṅkāyāḥ kṛtvā rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ |

kṛtakṛtyamivātmānaṃ manyate kālacoditaḥ ॥6-36-22॥
Translation
...(he posted Virupaksha) at the central garrison with many Rakshasas. Having thus arranged the defense of Lanka, that bull among Rakshasas, impelled by Time, considered himself successful/satisfied.
हिंदी अनुवाद
...(विरूपाक्ष को) बहुत से राक्षसों के साथ मध्य (सैनिक) छावनी (गुल्म) में स्थापित किया। इस प्रकार लंका की व्यवस्था करके, काल से प्रेरित वह राक्षसश्रेष्ठ (रावण) अपने को कृतकृत्य (सफल) मानने लगा।
English Commentary
The center (madhyame gulme) is held by Virupaksha, acting as the final line of defense or reserve force. Ravana feels kritakrityam (satisfied/accomplished) with this setup. However, the narrator reiterates kalachoditah (impelled by Time/Destiny), implying that no matter how perfect the formation, Destiny has already written the outcome.

विरूपाक्ष को केंद्र (Center) में रखा गया जो 'रिजर्व फोर्स' की तरह था। रावण अपनी व्यूहरचना से संतुष्ट था और स्वयं को 'कृतकृत्य' (जिसने सब कर लिया हो) मान रहा था। परन्तु वाल्मीकि फिर याद दिलाते हैं—'कालचोदितः' (काल द्वारा प्रेरित)। उसकी यह संतुष्टि भ्रम है।
