रक्षसामीश्वरं मां च देवतानां भयंकरम् ।
हीनं मां मन्यसे केन हीनं सर्वविक्रमैः ॥६-३६-५॥
rakṣasāmīśvaraṃ māṃ ca devatānāṃ bhayaṃkaram |
hīnaṃ māṃ manyase kena hīnaṃ sarvavikramaiḥ ॥6-36-5॥
Translation
'And I, who am the Lord of Rakshasas and terrifying even to the Gods—why do you consider me weak/inferior and devoid of all prowess?'
हिंदी अनुवाद
'और मैं, जो राक्षसों का ईश्वर (स्वामी) हूँ और देवताओं के लिए भी भय का कारण हूँ, मुझे तुम सभी पराक्रमों से हीन (कमजोर) क्यों मानते हो?'
English Commentary
Ravana contrasts his resume with Shri Rama's. He highlights his title as Rakshasam-ishvaram (Lord of Rakshasas) and his reputation as the terror of the gods. He takes Malyavan's advice as a personal insult to his martial capability. His inability to distinguish between past glory and present danger is his undoing.

रावण अपना परिचय 'देवतानां भयंकरम्' (देवताओं को डराने वाला) के रूप में देता है। उसका अहंकार उसे अपनी पिछली जीतों के आईने में ही देखने को मजबूर कर रहा है। उसे आश्चर्य है कि माल्यवान जैसा अनुभवी व्यक्ति उसे श्री राम की तुलना में 'हीन' (तुच्छ) कैसे समझ सकता है। यह आत्म-मुग्धता (Narcissism) का चरम है।
