मण्डलानि विचित्राणि स्थानानि विविधानि च ।
गोमूत्रिकाणि चित्राणि गतप्रत्यागतानि च ॥६-४०-२३॥
maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi sthānāni vividhāni ca |
gomūtrikāṇi citrāṇi gatapratyāgatāni ca ॥6-40-23॥
Translation
They displayed various wonderful circular movements (Mandalas), diverse postures (Sthanas), intricate zig-zag paths (Gomutrikas), and patterns of advancing and retreating.

उन्होंने विभिन्न प्रकार के विचित्र मण्डल (घेरे), अनेक प्रकार के स्थान (खड़े होने के ढंग), विचित्र गोमूत्रिका (टेढ़े-मेढ़े मार्ग) और आगे-पीछे हटने की गतियों का प्रदर्शन किया।
English Commentary
This verse is a repository of technical wrestling terminology. 'Gomutrika' refers to a zig-zag movement designed to confuse the opponent's aim. 'Gata-Pratyagata' involves advancing for a strike and quickly retreating. Sugriva's proficiency in these advanced combat maneuvers likely came as a surprise to the overconfident Ravana.

यह श्लोक प्राचीन मल्ल-युद्ध के तकनीकी शब्दावली का भंडार है। 'गोमूत्रिका' एक विशेष गति है जो टेढ़ी-मेढ़ी होती है ताकि शत्रु लक्ष्य न साध सके। 'गत-प्रत्यागत' आगे बढ़कर वार करना और तुरंत पीछे हटना है। सुग्रीव का इन कलाओं में निपुण होना रावण के लिए विस्मयकारी था।
