एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रक्षो मायाबलमथात्मनः ।
आरब्धुमुपसंपेदे ज्ञात्वा तं वानराधिपः ॥६-४०-२७॥
etasminnantare rakṣo māyābalamathātmanaḥ |
ārabdhumupasaṃpede jñātvā taṃ vānārādhipaḥ ॥6-40-27॥
Translation
In the meantime, when that Rakshasa (Ravana) began to employ his illusory powers (Maya), the King of Monkeys, Sugriva, perceived it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इसी बीच, जब उस राक्षस (रावण) ने अपनी मायावी शक्ति का प्रयोग करना आरम्भ किया, तब वानरराज सुग्रीव ने उसे जान लिया।
English Commentary
Realizing that he could not defeat Sugriva through pure physical strength, Ravana resorts to 'Maya' (illusion/sorcery). This is typical of the Rakshasa nature—reverting to deceit when faced with an equal in a fair fight. Sugriva’s keen perception in identifying the onset of Maya shows that he was mentally as sharp as he was physically strong.

जब रावण ने देखा कि वह बाहुबल में सुग्रीव को पराजित नहीं कर पा रहा है, तब उसने 'माया' (छल) का सहारा लिया। यह राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति का परिचायक है—जब न्यायोचित युद्ध में हार निश्चित हो, तो वे छल का प्रयोग करते हैं। सुग्रीव की बुद्धिमत्ता यहाँ प्रशंसनीय है कि उन्होंने तुरंत खतरे को पहचान लिया।
