Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ददर्श लङ्कां सुन्यस्तां रम्यकाननशोभिताम् ।
तस्यां गोपुरशृङ्गस्थं राक्षसेन्द्रं दुरासदम् ॥६-४०-३॥
dadarśa laṅkāṃ sunyastāṃ ramyakānanaśobhitām |
tasyāṃ gopuraśṛṅgasthaṃ rākṣasendraṃ durāsadam ॥6-40-3॥
Translation
He beheld the well-laid-out city of Lanka, adorned with beautiful forests. There, He saw the invincible King of Rakshasas, Ravana, perched upon the top of a gate-tower.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सुव्यवस्थित और रमणीय वनों से सुशोभित लंकापुरी को देखा। वहाँ उन्होंने नगर के द्वार के शिखर पर बैठे हुए अजेय राक्षसराज रावण को देखा।
English Commentary
This marks the first visual encounter between Shri Rama and Ravana. Ravana’s position atop the 'Gopura' (gate-tower) reflects his arrogance and high status. Described as 'Durasadam' (difficult to approach or invincible), the text acknowledges his formidable power. This sighting sets the stage for the epic clash, positioning the two polar opposites of the narrative—Dharma and Adharma—in direct sight of each other.

पहली बार श्री राम और रावण का आमना-सामना (दृष्टि स्तर पर) होता है। रावण का 'गोपुर' (द्वार) के शिखर पर होना उसके अहंकार और ऊँचाई के प्रति उसके प्रेम को दर्शाता है। उसे 'दुरासद' (अजेय या जिसे प्राप्त करना कठिन हो) कहा गया है, जो उसकी सैन्य शक्ति की स्वीकारोक्ति है। यह दृश्य उस महान युद्ध की पूर्वपीठिका है जहाँ सत्य और असत्य के दो ध्रुव एक-दूसरे के सम्मुख खड़े हैं।
