काकाः श्येनास्तथा गृध्रा नीचैः परिपतन्ति च ।
शिवाश्चाप्यशिवा वाचः प्रवदन्ति महास्वनाः ॥६-४१-२०॥
kākāḥ śyenāstathā gṛdhrā nīcaiḥ paripatanti ca |
śivāścāpyaśivā vācaḥ pravadanti mahāsvanāḥ ॥6-41-20॥
Translation
Crows, hawks, and vultures are flying low. And jackals too are howling loudly with inauspicious voices.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कौवे, बाज और गिद्ध नीचे की ओर उड़ रहे हैं। और सियारिनें (शिवा) भी अमंगलकारी ऊँचे स्वर में बोल रही हैं।
English Commentary
Scavenger birds flying low indicates their anticipation of feeding on corpses. The howling of jackals ('shiva') is a standard omen of death in Indian literature. The irony of the word 'shiva' (which implies auspiciousness) used for a jackal whose cry is 'ashiva' (inauspicious) is poetic. These terrestrial signs confirm that the battlefield will soon be littered with the dead, feasting the beasts of prey.

युद्धक्षेत्र में गिद्ध और कौवों का नीचे उड़ना यह बताता है कि वे शवों के मांस की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं। सियारों का बोलना मृत्यु का आह्वान माना जाता है। 'शिवा' शब्द यहाँ सियारिन के लिए प्रयुक्त है, और विरोधाभास देखिए कि नाम 'शिवा' (कल्याणकारी) है लेकिन उनकी वाणी 'अशिवा' (अमंगलकारी) है। यह लंका के आसन्न श्मशान में बदलने का पूर्व-चित्रण है।
