English Commentary
Shri Rama acknowledges Sugriva's power, likening it to the cosmic forces of Indra and Varuna. However, he admits that during the moments Sugriva was engaging Ravana alone, anxiety had driven him to a stark resolution. This verse highlights the vulnerability inherent in love; even knowing Sugriva's strength, Shri Rama feared the worst. It sets the stage for the revelation of the extreme vow Shri Rama had mentally taken, demonstrating the depth of his emotional investment in Sugriva's safety.
