सहसा भीमनिर्घोषमुद्घुष्टं रजनीचरैः ।
ततः प्रचोदिता भेर्यश्चन्द्रपाण्डरपुष्कराः ॥६-४२-३४॥
sahasā bhīmanirghoṣamudghuṣṭaṃ rajanīcaraiḥ |
tataḥ pracoditā bheryaścandrapāṇḍarapuṣkarāḥ ॥6-42-34॥
Translation
...the Night-Roamers suddenly raised a terrifying clamor. Then, urged on, the war-drums (Bheris) with heads white like the moon were beaten.
हिंदी अनुवाद
...निशाचरों ने सहसा भयानक घोष (कोलाहल) किया। तदनन्तर (आदेश से) प्रेरित होकर चन्द्रमा के समान सफेद मुख (चमड़े) वाली भेरी (नगाड़े) बजाई गईं।
English Commentary
The Rakshasa army responds with a sudden, terrifying roar. The war drums ('bheryah') are struck. Valmiki adds a poetic touch describing the drums as having 'chandra-pandara-pushkarah' (heads white as the moon), possibly referring to the stretched white leather. The noise signals the unleashing of the demon army.

रावण का आदेश मिलते ही राक्षसों ने 'भीमनिर्घोष' (डरावना शोर) किया। युद्ध के वाद्य यंत्र बजने लगे। 'भेरी' (नगाड़ों) के लिए सुंदर उपमा दी गई है—'चन्द्रपाण्डरपुष्कराः' (जिनका बजने वाला हिस्सा/खाल चंद्रमा जैसा सफेद था)। यह दृश्य और श्रव्य प्रभाव युद्ध की भीषणता को बढ़ाता है।
