युध्यतामेव तेषां तु तदा वानररक्षसाम् ।
रविरस्तं गतो रात्रिः प्रवृत्ता प्राणहारिणी ॥६-४४-१॥
yudhyatāmeva teṣāṃ tu tadā vānararakṣasām |
ravirastaṃ gato rātriḥ pravṛttā prāṇahāriṇī ॥6-44-1॥
Translation
Even as the monkeys and demons continued to fight, the sun set, and the deadly night, capable of taking away lives, began.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन वानरों और राक्षसों के युद्ध करते समय ही सूर्य अस्त हो गया और प्राणों का हरण करने वाली रात्रि आरंभ हो गई।
English Commentary
This verse marks the beginning of a decisive and terrifying phase of the war. According to the standard rules of Dharma-yuddha, hostilities should cease at sunset, but the intensity here is such that rules are abandoned. The epithet 'Pranaharini' (life-taking) used for the night suggests that this is no ordinary darkness; it is the shadow of death itself. Valmiki sets a grim tone for the chaos that is about to ensue in the darkness.

यह श्लोक युद्ध के एक निर्णायक और भयानक चरण के आरंभ का सूचक है। धर्मयुद्ध के सामान्य नियमों के अनुसार सूर्यास्त के बाद युद्ध विश्री राम होना चाहिए, किन्तु यहाँ स्थिति इतनी तनावपूर्ण है कि नियम टूट रहे हैं। प्राणहारिणी विशेषण रात्रि के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि यह साधारण रात नहीं है, बल्कि मृत्यु की काली छाया है। महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ वातावरण की गंभीरता को स्थापित कर रहे हैं।
