Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राक्षसोऽस्मीति हरयो हरिश्चास्मीति राक्षसाः ।
अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुस्तस्मिंस्तमसि दारुणे ॥६-४४-३॥
rākṣaso'smīti harayo hariścāsmīti rākṣasāḥ |
anyonyaṃ samare jaghnustasmiṃstamasi dāruṇe ॥6-44-3॥
Translation
Identifying 'This is a Rakshasa!', the monkeys struck, and identifying 'This is a Monkey!', the Rakshasas struck; thus they killed each other in that terrible darkness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
'यह राक्षस है' ऐसा मानकर वानरों ने और 'यह वानर है' ऐसा मानकर राक्षसों ने उस दारुण अन्धकार में समरभूमि में एक-दूसरे का संहार किया।
English Commentary
This vividly portrays the confusion and chaos caused by zero visibility in the pitch darkness. Soldiers were identifying enemies based merely on sound or instinct. The particle 'iti' here suggests the thought process or challenge identifying the opponent. The verse highlights the horror of war where reason is replaced by impulse and chance encounters.

घोर अन्धकार में दृश्यता शून्य होने के कारण उत्पन्न भ्रम और अराजकता का यह सजीव चित्रण है। सैनिक केवल आवाज़ या अनुमान के आधार पर शत्रु की पहचान कर रहे थे। 'इति' शब्द यहाँ पहचान या ललकार का सूचक है। यह श्लोक युद्ध की विभीषिका को दर्शाता है जहाँ विवेक का स्थान आवेश और संयोग ने ले लिया है।
