रावणो रक्षसां मध्ये श्रुत्वा शत्रू निपातितौ ।
उपाघ्राय स मूर्ध्यैनं पप्रच्छ प्रीतमानसः ॥६-४६-४८॥
rāvaṇo rakṣasāṃ madhye śrutvā śatrū nipātitau |
upāghrāya sa mūr dhyainaṃ papraccha prītamānasaḥ ॥6-46-48॥
Translation
Hearing among the Rakshasas that the enemies had been struck down, Ravana, with a delighted mind, smelled his son's head (as a blessing) and asked (for details).
हिंदी अनुवाद
राक्षसों के बीच शत्रुओं के धराशायी होने की बात सुनकर, रावण ने प्रसन्न मन से अपने पुत्र का सिर सूँघा और (युद्ध का विवरण) पूछा।
English Commentary
Smelling the head was an ancient way of expressing affection and blessing. Ravana's delight confirms his demonic nature, which celebrates the perceived victory of unrighteousness. He now wishes to know the specifics of the victory to be fully assured of his own safety.

सिर सूँघना प्राचीन काल में प्रेम और आशीर्वाद व्यक्त करने का एक तरीका था। रावण की प्रसन्नता उसके राक्षसी स्वभाव को पुष्ट करती है जो अधर्म की विजय पर उत्सव मनाता है। वह अब उस जीत की बारीकियों को जानना चाहता है ताकि वह अपनी सुरक्षा के प्रति आश्वस्त हो सके।
