Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यौ ताविन्द्रजिता युद्धे भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
निबद्धौ शरबन्धेन निष्प्रकम्पभुजौ कृतौ ॥६-५१-११॥
tadapriyaṃ dīnamukhā rāvaṇasya niśācarāḥ |
kṛtsnaṃ nivedayāmāsuryathāvadvākyakovidāḥ ॥6-51-11॥
Translation
Those Night-Roamers with dejected faces, skilled in speech, reported that entire unpleasant news to Ravana exactly as it was.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन दीन मुख वाले और बात करने में चतुर (वाक्यकोविदाः) निशाचरों ने रावण को वह सारा अप्रिय समाचार ज्यों का त्यों (यथावत्) कह सुनाया।
English Commentary
The spies are professionals ('vakyakovidah' - skilled in speech), yet they cannot hide their dejection ('dinamukha'). They deliver the 'apriyam' (unpleasant) report 'yathavat' (accurately). In a tyranny, delivering bad news is dangerous, but the gravity of the situation demanded total transparency.

गुप्तचर 'वाक्यकोविदाः' (बोलने में चतुर) थे, जानते थे कि राजा को बुरी खबर कैसे देनी है, फिर भी उनके चेहरे 'दीन' थे। उन्होंने 'यथावत्' (सत्य/जैसा का तैसा) समाचार दिया—सत्य छिपाना अब संभव नहीं था। एक राजा के लिए 'अप्रियं' (अप्रिय सत्य) सुनना सबसे कठिन परीक्षा होती है।
