कबन्धानि समुत्पेतुर्भीरुणां भीषणानि वै ॥६-५४-१०॥
kabandhāni samutpeturbhīrūṇāṃ bhīṣaṇāni vai |
bhujapāṇiśiracchinnāśchinnakāyāśca bhūtale ॥6-54-10॥
Translation
Headless trunks (Kabandhas), with severed arms and hands and mutilated bodies, sprang up on the ground, appearing terrifying to the cowardly.

वहाँ भुजा, हाथ और सिर से रहित तथा कटे हुए शरीर वाले डरावने कबन्ध (धड़) उछल रहे थे, जो कायरों को भयभीत करने वाले थे।

The imagery of 'Kabandhas' (headless trunks) dancing or springing up is a classical motif in Indian epic poetry, symbolizing the sheer adrenaline and residual martial energy of the warriors even after decapitation. This supernatural sight is described as terrifying specifically to the 'cowardly,' implying that the brave warriors continued unfazed. प्राचीन युद्ध वर्णनों में यह मान्यता है कि अत्यधिक वीर योद्धाओं के सिर कटने के बाद भी उनके धड़ (कबन्ध) कुछ क्षणों तक लड़ते या उछलते रहते हैं। यह दृश्य 'भीरूणां भीषणानि' अर्थात् कायरों के मन में गहरा भय उत्पन्न करने वाला था। यह युद्ध की पराकाष्ठा है जहाँ जीवन शक्ति मृत्यु के बाद भी शेष रहती प्रतीत होती है। यहाँ अद्भुत और भयानक रस का मिश्रण है, जो युद्ध क्षेत्र को सामान्य मानवीय अनुभव से परे एक भयावह लोक में बदल देता है।
