Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संवृतानि च भूतानि ददृशुर्न रणाजिरं ।
न ध्वजा न पताका वा वर्म वा तुरगोऽपि वा ॥६-५५-२०॥
saṃvṛtāni ca bhūtāni dadṛśurna raṇājiraṃ |
na dhvaja na patākā vā varma vā turago'pi vā ॥6-55-20॥
Translation
Being covered by dust, no living being could see the battlefield. Neither banners, nor flags, nor armor, nor even horses were visible there.
हिंदी अनुवाद
धूल से ढके होने के कारण कोई भी प्राणी युद्धभूमि को नहीं देख पा रहा था। वहाँ न ध्वजाएं दिखाई दे रही थीं, न पताकाएं, न कवच और न ही घोड़े।
English Commentary
This describes a state of total chaos and visual darkness in battle. The identifying marks of the military (banners, armor, etc.) have vanished. In such a situation, organized structure collapses, leaving only the warrior's primal instinct to survive and slay the enemy. It is the peak of battlefield uncertainty.
हिंदी टीका
यह युद्ध के पूर्ण कोलाहल और अंधकार की स्थिति है। सेना की पहचान के चिह्न (ध्वज, कवच आदि) भी ओझल हो गए हैं। ऐसी स्थिति में सैन्य व्यवस्था भंग हो जाती है और केवल योद्धा का अपना प्राण बचाने और शत्रु को मारने का मूल स्वभाव शेष रह जाता है। यह अनिश्चितता का चरमोत्कर्ष है।
