Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राजन् मन्त्रितपूर्वं नः कुशलैः सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
विवादश्चापि नो वृत्तः समवेक्ष्य परस्परम् ॥६-५७-१३॥
rākṣasendramuvācedamasurendramivośanā |
rājan mantritapūrvaṃ na kuśalaiḥ saha mantribhiḥ ॥6-57-13॥
Translation
...spoke to the Lord of Rakshasas just as Ushanas (Shukracharya) speaks to the Lord of Asuras. (He said) O King! Did we not deliberate previously with capable ministers?
हिंदी अनुवाद
...राक्षसराज से वैसे ही (नीतिपूर्ण) वचन कहे जैसे शुक्राचार्य असुरराज (विरोचन/बलि) से कहते हैं। (उसने कहा) हे राजन! क्या हमने पहले ही कुशल मंत्रियों के साथ मंत्रणा नहीं की थी?
English Commentary
Comparing Prahasta to Ushanas (the preceptor of the Asuras) elevates his stature from a mere soldier to a wise counselor. He reminds Ravana that this situation was debated ('mantritapurvam') beforehand. This implies that the current crisis is a result of ignoring past counsel. Prahasta is gently pointing out that the time for choosing the right path was in the past, but he remains loyal to the consequences of the King's decision.
