प्रदानेन तु सीतायाः श्रेयो व्यवसितं मया ।
अप्रदाने पुनर्युद्धं दृष्टमेतत्तथैव नः ॥६-५७-१४॥
vivādaścāpi no vṛttaḥ samavekṣya parasparam |
pradānena tu sītāyāḥ śreyo vyavasitaṃ mayā ॥6-57-14॥
Translation
A dispute also occurred amongst us while considering each other's views. At that time, I had determined that returning Sita was the best course of action (Shreyas).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हम लोगों के बीच परस्पर एक-दूसरे (के विचारों) को देखकर विवाद भी हुआ था। (उस समय) मैंने सीता को लौटा देने में ही कल्याण (श्रेय) निश्चित किया था।
English Commentary
Prahasta demonstrates his integrity by reminding Ravana of his previous stand: returning Sita ('pradanena tu sitayah') was the only way to ensure welfare ('shreyas'). He admits there was 'vivada' (dispute/debate), showing he had the courage to disagree with the King for the sake of the kingdom. This backstory adds tragedy to his character; he fights for a cause he knows is unjust, bound by his duty to a King who rejected his wise counsel.

प्रहस्त यहाँ स्पष्ट स्वीकार करता है कि उसने पहले सीता को लौटाने का प्रस्ताव दिया था। 'प्रदानेन तु सीतायाः'—यही युद्ध रोकने का एकमात्र उपाय था। उसने रावण से मतभेद ('विवाद') होने का जोखिम उठाकर भी सत्य कहा था। यह श्लोक प्रहस्त के चरित्र को ऊँचा उठाता है—वह अंधभक्त नहीं था, उसने धर्म और नीति का पक्ष लिया था। किन्तु अब जब युद्ध छिड़ चुका है, उसकी स्थिति बदल गई है।
