तां राक्षसगणैर्गुप्तां गुल्मैर्बहुभिरावृताम् ।
ददर्श नगरीं लङ्कां पताकाध्वजमालिनीम् ॥६-५७-३॥
purīṃ pariyayau laṅkāṃ sarvān gulmānavekṣitum |
tāṃ rākṣasagaṇairguptāṃ gulmairbahubhirāvṛtām ॥6-57-3॥
Translation
...went around the city of Lanka to inspect all the defense outposts (gulmas). That city was protected by troops of Rakshasas and surrounded by many garrisons.

...लंका नगरी के रक्षक दलों (गुल्मों) का निरीक्षण करने के लिए नगर की परिक्रमा की। वह नगरी अनेक रक्षक दलों से घिरी हुई थी और राक्षसों के समूहों द्वारा सुरक्षित थी।
English Commentary
Acting as a diligent commander-in-chief, Ravana personally inspects the 'gulmas' (garrisons or outposts). Despite Lanka already being heavily fortified and guarded by Rakshasa troops, Akampana's defeat shook Ravana's complacency. His personal tour of the defenses serves a dual purpose: to ensure tactical readiness against the Vanaras and to boost the morale of his soldiers by showing that their King is actively involved in the city's defense.

एक जिम्मेदार राजा की भाँति रावण स्वयं अपनी राजधानी की सुरक्षा व्यवस्था ('गुल्म' अर्थात् सैन्य चौकियाँ) की जाँच करने निकला। यद्यपि लंका पहले से ही सुरक्षित थी, फिर भी अकम्पन की मृत्यु ने उसे सतर्क कर दिया था। यह श्लोक लंका की सैन्य सुदृढ़ता का वर्णन करता है, जहाँ चप्पे-चप्पे पर राक्षस तैनात थे। रावण का व्यक्तिगत निरीक्षण सैनिकों का मनोबल बढ़ाने और सुरक्षा में किसी भी त्रुटि को सुधारने के उद्देश्य से था।
