निनदन्तः स्वरान् घोरान् राक्षसा जग्मुरग्रतः ।
भीमरूपा महाकायाः प्रहस्तस्य पुरस्सराः ॥६-५७-३०॥
śuśruve śaṅkhaśabdaśca prayāte vāhinīpatau |
ninadantaḥ svarān ghorān rākṣasā jagmuragrataḥ ॥6-57-30॥
Translation
The sound of conch shells was heard as the army commander marched out. Roaring with terrible voices, the Rakshasas went ahead.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सेनापति के प्रस्थान करने पर शंखों का शब्द सुनाई दिया। राक्षस भयानक स्वर में गर्जना करते हुए (रथ के) आगे-आगे चल रहे थे।
English Commentary
Along with drums, the piercing sound of conch shells ('shankha-shabdah') marks the auspicious start of the campaign. The vanguard consists of roaring Rakshasas, clearing the path for their commander. Their 'terrible voices' add to the cacophony, creating an atmosphere of terror intended to unsettle the opposing Vanara forces.

शंखनाद युद्ध का पारंपरिक आरंभ है। प्रहस्त के रथ के आगे पैदल सेना भयानक गर्जनाएं ('स्वरान् घोरान्') कर रही थी। यह दृश्य एक अनुशासित सेना का नहीं, बल्कि एक उन्मत्त, हिंसक भीड़ का है जो अपने शिकार पर टूट पड़ने को तैयार है। अग्रिम पंक्ति के राक्षसों का शोर मनोवैज्ञानिक युद्ध का हिस्सा था।
