Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
केतुमूर्धनि गृध्रो ऽस्य निलीनो दक्षिणामुखः ।
तुदन्नुभयतः पार्श्वं समग्रामहरत् प्रभाम् ॥६-५७-३९॥
keturmūrdhani gṛdhro'sya nilīno dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ |
tudannubhayataḥ pārśvaṃ samagrāmaharatprabhām ॥6-57-39॥
Translation
A vulture sat on the top of his flag-staff facing south. Pecking at both sides, it robbed the flag of all its splendor.
हिंदी अनुवाद
एक गिद्ध उसकी ध्वजा के शिखर पर दक्षिण (यम की दिशा) की ओर मुख करके बैठ गया। वह ध्वजा के दोनों पार्श्वों (किनारों) को चोंच से मारता हुआ उसकी सम्पूर्ण शोभा को हरने लगा।
English Commentary
The vulture, a symbol of death, perching on the battle-standard ('ketu') is a definitive bad omen. Facing South (the direction of Yama/Death) seals the interpretation. By pecking at the flag, the bird symbolically dismantles Prahasta's glory ('prabham') and authority. It signifies that victory has already fled from his banner.
हिंदी टीका
ध्वजा पर गिद्ध का बैठना, वह भी दक्षिण मुख करके (जो मृत्यु के देवता यम की दिशा है), अत्यंत अशुभ है। गिद्ध का ध्वजा को नोचना ('तुदन्') प्रहस्त के विजय-चिह्न और सम्मान के नष्ट होने का प्रतीक है। उसने रथ की सारी 'प्रभा' (कांति) हर ली, अर्थात प्रहस्त का तेज और भाग्य अब उसका साथ छोड़ चुके थे।
