सारथेर्बहुशश्चास्य सङ्ग्राममवगाहतः ।
प्रतोदो न्यपतद्धस्तात् सूतस्य हयसादिनः ॥६-५७-४०॥
sāratherbahuśaścāsya saṃgrāmamavagāhataḥ |
pratodo nyapataddhastātsūtasya hayasādinaḥ ॥6-57-40॥
Translation
As he was entering the battlefield, the whip fell repeatedly from the hand of the charioteer who drives the horses.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब वह युद्धभूमि में प्रवेश कर रहा था, तब घोड़ों को हांकने वाले उसके सारथि के हाथ से चाबुक (प्रतोद) बार-बार गिरने लगा।
English Commentary
Loss of control is symbolized by the whip falling from the charioteer's hand. In chariot warfare, the charioteer is the pilot; his nervousness or clumsiness endangers the warrior. Occurring 'repeatedly' ('bahushah') as they entered the battle suggests a nervous breakdown or a bad omen indicating that the chariot's journey would not end well.

सारथि के हाथ से चाबुक ('प्रतोद') गिरना नियंत्रण खोने का संकेत है। एक कुशल सारथि के साथ ऐसा होना यह बताता है कि वह भयभीत था या दैवीय हस्तक्षेप से ऐसा हो रहा था। युद्ध में नियंत्रण (चाबुक) का छूट जाना हार का पूर्व संकेत है। 'बहुशः' (बार-बार) शब्द बताता है कि यह संयोग नहीं था, बल्कि एक चेतावनी थी।
