Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हतवीरौघवप्रां तु भग्नायुधमहाद्रुमाम् ।
शोणितौघमहातोयां यमसागरगमिनीम् ॥६-५८-२९॥
hatavīraughavaprāṃ tu bhagnāyudhamahādrumām |
śoṇitaughamahātoyāṃ yamasāgaragāminīm ॥6-58-29॥
Translation
With the heaps of slain heroes for its banks, broken weapons for its great trees, and the stream of blood for its waters, that battle-river was flowing toward the ocean of Death (Yama).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मरे हुए वीरों के समूह ही जहाँ तट हैं, टूटे हुए शस्त्र ही जहाँ विशाल वृक्ष हैं और बहता हुआ रक्त ही जहाँ जल है, वह युद्ध-नदी यमलोक रूपी सागर की ओर जा रही थी।
English Commentary
Here begins the detailed metaphor of the 'battle-river'. This river is the literal flow of Time and Death. Slain heroes have become its banks ('Vapra'). This portrayal effectively presents the transience and the ultimate consequence of war.
हिंदी टीका
यहाँ से 'युद्ध-नदी' का विस्तृत रूपक आरम्भ होता है। यह नदी साक्षात् काल का प्रवाह है। मरे हुए वीर इसके किनारे (वप्र) बन गए हैं। यह चित्रण युद्ध की नश्वरता और अंतिम परिणाम को अत्यंत प्रभावी ढंग से प्रस्तुत करता है।
